We are excited to join our friends at the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation of Central Texas in their annual Energy for Life Walkathon! The goal of the UMDF walkathon is to raise awareness as well as support those who are fighting mitochondrial disease in our area. Whether you, someone you love, or someone you know is fighting this disease, we can all come together to spread the word and raise money for research toward a cure.

From the Energy for Life website:

Did you know that 1 in 200 people carry a mutation that could turn into a mitochondrial disease at some point in their life? What is mitochondrial Disease? It is the body’s failure to turn food into energy. The effects of the disease vary. Some people lose their ability to see and hear, while others suffer total debilitation. In some cases, mitochondrial disease can be fatal.

You should care about mitochondrial disease because mitochondrial dysfunction is linked to some of the more well-known illnesses like Parkinson’s, Diabetes and some cancers.

When you make a donation through our Energy for Life Walkathon, you are not only helping UMDF provide support to those who suffer from mitochondrial disease, you are helping UMDF fund the research that could lead to a cure and potential treatments for a host of other diseases.

Please join us on Saturday, September 21, 2013 to raise money and awareness about mitochondrial disease.
